The Limits of Theodicy: An Eastern Orthodox Perspective on Evil and Interreligious Theology

This essay is written from the vantage point of a comparative theologian who is personally steeped in the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition and who primarily specializes in Christian-Muslim comparative theology. It might seems curious, then, that the present essay employs the comparative theological method in order to focus on questions of theodicy in the Christian and Hindu traditions. Perhaps even more curious, however, is that I aim not at articulating a comparative Christian-Hindu theodicy, but rather at suggesting that the most productive path forward is a comparative theological rejection of theodicy as a productive enterprise. Drawing from resources within my own Orthodox Christian tradition, as well as from the thought of Paul Ricoeur, my essay will revolve around two primary arguments: first, theodicy functions primarily to reconcile human beings to evil’s existence, thus legitimizing it and reducing the need to counteract evil; and second, religious traditions more effectively encounter the question of evil by teaching a path by which practitioners can mourn, reject, combat, and transform evil. Accordingly, I will first briefly examine two salient instances of comparative Christian-Hindu theodicy in order to demonstrate how my approach differs. Next, I will engage with key critics of theodicy, some of whom are skeptical of religion (or even hostile to it), and some of whom are religious adherents who maintain theodicy is an inherently deleterious mode of thought. I will conclude by drawing from both Fyodor Dostoevsky and Paul Ricoeur in order to suggest a more productive trajectory for comparative theology and the challenges posed by the existence of evil and suffering

Applying the proto-theory of design to explain and modify the parameter analysis method of conceptual design

This article reports on the outcomes of applying the notions provided by the reconstructed proto-theory of design, based on Aristotle’s remarks, to the parameter analysis (PA) method of conceptual design. Two research questions are addressed: (1) What further clarification and explanation to the approach of PA is provided by the proto-theory? (2) Which conclusions can be drawn from the study of an empirically derived design approach through the proto-theory regarding usefulness, validity and range of that theory? An overview of PA and an application example illustrate its present model and unique characteristics. Then, seven features of the proto-theory are explained and demonstrated through geometrical problem solving and analogies are drawn between these features and the corresponding ideas in modern design thinking. Historical and current uses of the terms analysis and synthesis in design are also outlined and contrasted, showing that caution should be exercised when applying them. Consequences regarding the design moves, process and strategy of PA allow proposing modifications to its model, while demonstrating how the ancient method of analysis can contribute to better understanding of contemporary design-theoretic issues

A critical point of view of targets and competencies in science textbooks: an educational proposal for primary teacher training

En la primera parte del artículo, se expone el diseño de una propuesta didáctica dirigida a maestros en formación del Grado de Educación Primaria desde un enfoque por indagación, a partir del análisis de los objetivos y las competencias que aparecen recogidos en los libros de texto de Educación Primaria, concretamente para el área de conocimiento del medio natural, social y cultural. Todo ello con el fin de que estos futuros docentes tomen conciencia de la importancia del saber analizar y valorar críticamente los distintos materiales didácticos usados en el aula, y en consecuencia, sean capaces de proponer alternativas o mejoras didácticas sobre estos manuales educativos. En la segunda parte se expone, a modo de reflexión, los obstáculos y dificultades halladas tras su implementación de la propuesta didáctica con la finalidad de proponer mejoras al diseño realizado y posibles oportunidades didácticas que dicha propuesta puede ofrecer

En el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje (E/A) es importante la construcción del conocimiento teniendo en cuenta los actores implicados en él, es por ello primordial que el docente reflexione a partir de su praxis y de la información, que de un modo u otro reciba de sus alumnos. En este sentido, el diario del alumno ha sido una herramienta fundamental para conectar la intencionalidad del docente con la percepción del alumnado y poder, a partir de él, descubrir los secretos de la construcción del conocimiento individual. Resistance to eyespot (Pseudocercosporella herpotricoides) and distribution of biochemical markers in hexaploid lines derived from double cross (Triticum turgidum x Aegilops ventricosa) x T. aestivum

There are not good intraspecific sources of resistance to the eyespot disea se of wheat, aaused by Cercosporella herpotrichoides Fvon . The -ínterspecifia transfer of genes for resistanoe from Aegitops ventricosa into hexaploid wheat has been only partially achieved, because the degree of resistanoe attained is not as high as that of the donor. We report here on the transfer of resistanoe in a double oross (Triticum turgidum var. rubroatrwv H-1-1 x Ae.ventricosa AP-D x T.aestivum cv. Almatense H-10-15. The high level of resistanoe in a high proportion of the lines strongly suggests a simple genetic control for this oharacter (possibly by one major gene). The gene(s) responsible for resistanoe in the selected lines must be associa ted with the D genome of Aegilops ventricosa on the basis of a detailed study of the distribution of biochemioal markers in the H-93 lines. These results do not exelude that genes with similar effeets might be looated in the M° genome
